Why I love growing flowers

Updated: Sep 7, 2023

Sometimes I get asked, why flowers? What is your obsession with growing flowers? My first answer is straightforward because it's in my DNA, and secondly, I need a creative outlet that gives me something to look forward to.

I am a Mallee girl through and through. I had the best childhood growing up on the family farm, where our income came from growing things including cereal crops, sheep, pigs and poultry. Fast forward to now, and my story has mostly stayed the same. I married a farmer who grows and processes onion seeds for the domestic and international markets.

I discovered a few years ago while on my daily walk around one of our onion crops that I need things growing around me. I tuned in and noticed how much I enjoyed observing each stage of the onion seed growing cycle. It dawned on me that I needed to be growing something on a bigger scale.

Like many, I have a day job that is rewarding and pays my way. But after twenty-five years of working in administration, the workplace for me isn't getting easier; in fact, it's getting more complicated (in my opinion). It's faster, and the demands are greater. The need to be more contactable, the overwhelming pressure to stay current with the vast amount of technology available, and let's not forget about the never-ending emails that continue to pour into our inboxes each day. It's almost impossible to keep up. (Rant over. Let's get back to talking about flowers.)

Knowing I can go home after a hard day and sit with my flowers keeps me sane. It really does! I love that as the seasons change so does the flower patch. When writing this blog, we're in early Spring and our gladiolas and lillium bulbs are bursting through the ground daily. Next it will be time to plant the dahlias, and watch another cycle begin.

There is so much to look forward to! And this is why I grow flowers.

Our little flower farm fills my cup when everything else is trying to empty it. The process of growing flowers from start to finish is fulfilling. Furthermore, as the flower farm grows, so do our connections with our beautiful flower-loving customers.

When we decided to start Drift Sand Blooms back in 2021 (as we were going in and out of lockdowns), we decided that while we couldn't control what was going on around us, we could turn a negative situation into a positive one by doing something we'd talked about doing when my late grandmother was still with us.

Sometimes we have to pinch ourselves that Drift Sand Blooms has become our reality. We're coming into our third season and cannot wait to see what's ahead. We enjoy many special moments each season, mostly created by the ones we share with our fabulous customers.

I'll never forget when a bride-to-be (the following day) arrived with buckets and secateurs to walk the dahlia patch in search of perfect blooms for her bouquet. To my delight, she left with a car full of flowers.

Last season, there were so many happy moments, including being contacted to surprise people with bunches of flowers. This is my next level of happiness, and I can't thank people enough for trusting us to carry out such beautiful gestures.

We can't wait to do it all again this season! Remember to subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with everything that's happening. This way, you'll always be in the loop and never miss a beat.
